Be Careful Choosing Who Manages Your Social Media

When you are spending time on social media and you come across the accounts of your favorite businesses & brands, how often do you stop and wonder who is the person behind the account? Does it cross your mind? While technology is great, there are people behind every account to make things happen. Sometimes it is one person, often it takes an entire team. Have you ever wondered more about “who” is behind the account? How old are they? What is their real-life personality? If there is a social media team, how are they keeping a brand personality consistent? There is so much that goes in to running a social media account (well), that it’s easy to forget the work it takes to be GREAT!

As I have said time and time again, if you are going to be on social media with goals to grow, make sales, drive revenue, increase engagement, etc., you have to be GREAT. If you are going to settle for “good”, you’re going nowhere. Greatness means having the right person behind your account, specifically for a business or brand account.

Here’s the problem specifically for small businesses & start-ups. In most cases smaller/newer businesses don’t have someone on their staff whose specific job it is to manage social media. Sometimes the owner runs it, sometimes it gets added to someone else’s role, in many cases, whoever has the most followers on their personal account end up running for their business. Yes, this might work sometimes but in many cases you could be setting yourself up for a mess.

In partnership with Growth10 (G10), I am happy to present my next collaboration with Co-Founder, Tom Healy, where we discuss why it is ESSENTIAL that you are careful in selecting who is running the social media account(s) for your business.. Growth10 is the #1 community for entrepreneurs and as their mission states, Growth10 wants to help entrepreneurs grow faster and have a greater impact on the world. As part of your G10 membership, you will be providing a needs-based scholarship for an entrepreneur to be in the G10 Community. • Personal success DOES NOT equal business experience. Just because they get 2000 likes for their photo at the beach, it doesn’t mean they know & understand valuable analytic & insight tools.

  • Business skills are essential. Lack of basic business skills can get you in hot water. If your social media manager doesn’t understand communication, marketing, etc their social media knowledge is irrelevant.

  • If you work in an industry where specific knowledge/credentials are required, the social media manager needs to be able to answer questions for clients or prospective clients who contact your accounts. (Click here to view the accounting firm example in the video at 4:24)

  • Poor customer service skills can and will translate poorly.

  • Lack of “strategy knowledge” will lead to an ineffective overall strategy. The beginning may be successful when family & friends are attracted to your accounts, but how do you grow beyond that?

  • Consider outsourcing! I will work around your budget to provide the best social media management you will find.

Being selective when you are deciding who is managing your social media should be a requirement. You’ll thank me in the long-run. No matter how small or niche your business is, I can promise you that enhancing your social media business will only benefit you. Want to learn more? Contact me today!
